IP (Short for Internet Protocol) denotes the format of packets and addressing scheme for computers to communicate over the network.
There are currently 2 versions of Internet protocol - IPv4 and new version IPv6
Now as we have seen that there is high no of users who are accessing internet around the world and in future also, there will be continuous growth of internet which includes connection of various devices like mobiles, smartphones and other devices which requires more no of unique ip address.
With IPv4, we have certain amount of unique IP's i.e 2 ^ 32 ( 4,294,967,296 which is approx 4 billion addresses) available with IPv4.
Hence, as per the growing internet usage , we require more no of unique IP's that can fulfill our demand of high usage. So to overcome this we have solution of IPv6.
In IPv6, we have overcome the limitation of Unique IP's by increasing its Bit limit from 32 to 128.
So, IPv6 has 2^128 addresses (3.4 x 10^38) and also makes it Hexadecimal which overall makes longer address range.
Advantages of IPv6 over IPv4
- Provides more addresses as compared to IPv4
- Supporting Growth of Internet
- Better Handling of IP's for All devices.
- Provides Better Security.
- No more NAT (Network Address Translation)
- No more private address collisions.
- Auto configuration.
- More Efficient Routing
- Built-in Authentication and privacy support.
- Simpler header format.
